Rep. Scott Peters Earns Early Endorsement from Planned Parenthood in 2016 Re-Elect
San Diego –Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) has earned a strong, early endorsement in his 2016 re-election bid from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the campaign announced today.
“Planned Parenthood provides affordable reproductive and preventative health care to millions of American women and men -- birth control and services that reduce healthcare costs in the long run,” said Peters. “It’s astonishing to me that some members of Congress don’t understand this very basic math.”
Their early endorsement is particularly significant since all of Peters’ declared opponents have failed to speak out against Republican attempts to defund the organization. Based on a search of their campaign web sites, social media, and public statements, none has stated support for a woman’s right to choose.
“Choice is a fundamental question for any candidate for federal office; the voters deserve to know where candidates stand on women’s rights,” said Peters’ deputy campaign manager Kate Lyon.
“Congressman Peters continuously stands up against attacks to block patients from accessing essential care at Planned Parenthood, to ban abortion, and roll back insurance coverage for birth control,” said Darrah DiGiorgio Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest. “In San Diego, over 117,000 people rely on Planned Parenthood each year for essential, life-saving care. In this election, the health care for thousands of San Diegans – particularly young women and men, all of whom are hit the hardest by these recent attacks on reproductive health care – is at stake. We need to elect leaders who will stand up for women’s health care and protect a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions.
“We are very proud Planned Parenthood Action Fund has once again endorsed Congressman Scott Peters, a true champion for women and families,” DiGiorgio added.
Rep. Scott Peters is a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus and currently serves on the House Armed Services and Judiciary Committees. He is in his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives and is up for re-election this year.
He and his wife, Lynn Gorguze, are long-time supporters of Planned Parenthood. Gorguze formerly served on the Board of Directors of the organization’s Pacific Southwest chapter.
