Rep. Peters’ Statement on Budget Votes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after opposing H. Con. Res. 96, the budget framework introduced by Rep. Paul Ryan:

“Over the last two days, the House of Representatives has voted on six different budget proposals from across the ideological spectrum. While they will become the basis for future political commercials, none will become the law, as we already passed, and I supported, a two-year, bipartisan agreement last December.

As I said last Spring when Congress considered proposals for last year’s budget, we owe it to our constituents to sit down together, as a bipartisan group, to craft a budget that cuts wasteful spending, tackles our long-term debt, preserves a safety net for the most vulnerable, reforms the tax code to enhance our global competitiveness abroad and job creation at home, supports a strong military, and makes the necessary investments in infrastructure, education, and basic scientific research that will support our country and our children into the future.

“None of the budgets this week accomplished that goal, and were instead partisan proposals that I could not support. I will continue to work every day to find solutions in the common ground.”
