Rep. Peters, Bipartisan Majority Vote for Delay in Individual Mandate Tax

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement after voting for H.R. 4118 to delay the tax penalty on individuals who do not buy health insurance as required under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Peters, who believes we have to fix Obamacare, not repeal it, has expressed extreme frustration at the botched initial rollout of the Obamacare website, and has repeatedly supported changes proposed by both parties to fix the new law and make it better. He’s voted to keep the promise that if you like your plan you can keep it, and to make sure individuals and families are given the same extension on enrollment that the President gave businesses. Peters also has refused to take taxpayer-subsidized health care, because he believes it’s not fair for Congressmembers to get subsidized health care while others are struggling to afford insurance.

“The new health care law is already doing a lot of good for a lot of families; we can’t go back to a system that allows insurance companies to deny coverage to people for pre-existing conditions, or to drop patients when they get sick,” Rep. Peters said. “But the law is still far from perfect. There’s a lot of work to be done and I intend to do everything I can to make it work for everyone. While California’s exchange has seen some success enrolling individuals for coverage, the ongoing issues with the federal website made today’s vote necessary.”
