Congressman Peters Introduces La Jolla Post Office Bill

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) introduced the Community Post Office Relocation Act with Congresswoman Susan Davis (CA-53). This effort follows Congresswoman Davis’s work last Congress.

The U.S. Postal Service is scaling back their services and selling off a number of their assets due to budget issues. This bill will allow communities like La Jolla to purchase their post office building, so that they can keep the post office services they enjoy or decide who occupies the space. Specifically, the bill authorizes the U.S. Postal Service to sell the building, at fair market value, to eligible non-profits and gives the village of La Jolla the right of first refusal to purchase post office buildings that are subject to closure.

“Saving the Wall Street Post Office was a promise I made before being elected to Congress,” said Peters.  “As a resident of La Jolla, I know first-hand the importance our post office has to our neighborhood. I’m excited to be introducing this bill with Susan Davis today and look forward to helping the town of La Jolla keep our historic treasure.”

“This has the potential to be a win-win for both the La Jolla community and the Postal Service,” said Congresswoman Susan Davis. “La Jollans have come together to say that the Wall Street building is more than just a post office to them—it’s at the heart of their history, their identity and their daily commerce. I look forward to working with Scott on La Jolla’s efforts to purchase and maintain their historic post office.”
