California Teachers Association backs Peters for Congress
San Diego -- The Scott Peters for Congress campaign today announced that the California Teachers Association (CTA) has endorsed Peters in his bid to unseat incumbent Brian Bilbray in the new 52nd Congressional District. The CTA represents 325,000 teachers, counselors, school librarians, social workers, psychologists, and nurses who work in K-12 school systems.
The association picked Peters after he and the other Democratic candidate in the race participated in a stringent endorsement process that included a lengthy questionnaire and interview.
“I have a track record of standing up for what’s right, for working people, for kids and families. I will always put our schools and children first,” Peters said. “It’s a particular honor to have the support of the men and women who are on the front lines of public education. I have incredible respect for them and am grateful for their support.”
Peters Campaign Manager Robert Dempsey noted that it is particularly significant that the CTA chose to back Peters because another candidate in this race is a teacher.
“I believe the CTA endorsed Scott because they know he is the candidate that will be the most effective advocate and that he has the best chances of beating Brian Bilbray,” he said.
The CTA’s membership also includes community college faculty, California State University faculty, and education support professionals, making it the largest most powerful voice of educators in the state.
Their endorsement is the latest in an array of impressive endorsements Peters has secured in this race, including the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council and San Diego’s most high-profile Democratic elected officials. Click here for a full list of endorsements.
